On 14th March, 1915, after their involvement in the Battle of Neuve Chapelle from 10th-12th March, the 13th London battalion of 25 Brigade, 8th Division, relieved the 2nd Middlesex battalion in the front line of the battlefield where, although the fighting had subsided, there was still plenty of shelling by both sides taking place. Douglas Ray died from wounds on 31st March, after having been taken back to a base hospital in Rouen, but it is not known when he was wounded.
